Multiracial American Population Grew Faster Than Single-Race Segment In 2010 Census…

From 2000 to 2010, the number of Americans who consider themselves multiracial grew faster than those who self-identify as a single race, with the largest gains coming in the once racially segregated South and among those who identify as both white and black, according to a new U.S. Census Bureau report.

Those identifying with multiple races grew by 32 percent over the decade, for a total of 9 million. Single-race identifiers grew by just 9.2 percent, according to the 2010 Census, which also showed the slowest overall population growth rate since the Great Depression.

Ninety-two percent of those who reported being multiracial checked just two races on the Census questionnaire. Among the rest, 7.5 percent identified with three races and less than 1 percent reported four or more races.

The first constitutionally mandated decennial population count was conducted in 1790, but Americans weren’t given the option to identify with more than one race until the 2000 Census. Although government officials expected significantly more people to check more than one box the second time around, the new analysis offers demographers their first crack at comparing changes in racial identification over time. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, visits McDonald’s in Moscow as he meets with Russian prime minister…

Many tourists feel the need to enjoy home comforts even while travelling the world. And apparently billionaires are no exception – Mark Zuckerberg has apparently been spotted visiting McDonald’s while on a trip to Russia.

The Facebook CEO is in Moscow for a meeting with the country’s prime minister Dmitry Medvedev in an attempt to boost his company’s profile among Russia’s 140million citizens.

Mr Zuckerberg is already known to be a fan of McDonald’s moreish burgers and fries, having taken his wife Priscilla Chan to a branch of the restaurant in Rome on the couple’s honeymoon in May. Mr Zuckerberg will be hoping to emulate McDonald’s in his attempt to make Facebook a major player among Russian web users. Click here to continue reading…

Salma Hayek often opts for ultra-sultry gowns with look-at-me silhouettes and tons of sex appeal. But after earning style props from more than 14,000 StyleWatch readers and landing herself at the top of our current best-dressed list, the Savages star may start to rethink her style choices. She snagged the number-one spot thanks to a simple, subtle and yes, even a bit conservative, sheath.

The Mexican actress’s knee-length leather charcoal dress, worn with Sergio Rossi pumps and a bright-red pout to the Savages photocall in Rome, got an 82 percent approval rating and helped her edge out pal Penélope Cruz, who wore a L’Wren Scott floral-print dress, a coordinating clutch and black Ferragamo heels at the Spain photocall for Twice Born. She also beat Taylor Swift, Natalie Portman and Halle Berry. No easy feat.

We have a feeling that Hayek may have turned over a new leaf and we expect to see her in similarly understated stylish ensembles over the next few months.

“Baby Hank got himself into sports! I hung a tennis ball in the garage and at first he was just [hitting it] with the tennis racquet to develop coordination, but now he has a little wiffle ball bat he’s working on. And he’s a tremendous soccer player!”

Spotted: The Jolie-Pitts at a South France park…

If you thought they disappeared, think again! Brangelina’s brood is back and ready to take over the world … well, sort of.

Angelina Jolie and five of her six kids with fiance Brad Pitt, — Pax, 8; Zahara, 7; Shiloh, 6; and 4-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne — stopped by a playground near their family’s Chateau Miraval in the South of France last weekend. All the kiddies seemed to be having a great time as they bounced around and ran after one another at the park.

Noticeably missing was Jolie’s oldest son, Maddox, 10, and Pitt, who were probably hanging out together back at the Jolie-Pitt estate. According to X17online, Jolie picked up Happy Meals for her children, who “happily” noshed away at their lunches. Wouldn’t you after all that bouncing?

Both Jolie and Pitt have been busy bees since announcing their engagement in April. Jolie has been filming the new Disney movie “Maleficent” in England, as well as traveling to Iraq, Turkey and Lebanon to visit with Syrian refugees.

Pitt, on the other hand, spends most of his time shooting the new flick “The Counselor,” while promoting his upcoming film “Killing Them Softly” in London.

Based on the best-selling book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the new series Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide introduces Mendes and other stars, including America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde to women and girls living under difficult circumstances, ranging from maternal death to prostitution.

JP Morgan’s Food Stamp Empire…

In 2010, President Obama signed into law the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. The bill added $4.5 billion to child-nutrition programs over the next decade, put in place nutrition standards for school lunch programs and vending machines, and implemented training for the cafeteria workers who feed 31 million students a day through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs.

It received bipartisan support, and was hailed as a compassionate victory for America’s poorest children. The bill was also, however, a potentially good development for mega bank JP Morgan Chase. Why, you may be wondering, would one of the nation’s biggest banks benefit from a bill meant to feed poor children?

A closer look at the legislation reveals the answer. The bill mandates that “all state agencies implement Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) systems by October 1, 2020” for those receiving money through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Unfortunately, the solution to this problem is multifaceted. Black women’s high breast cancer mortality rates are linked to poor access to medical care, inadequate utilization of early detection precautions, differences in treatment, and differences in tumor characteristics compared to their white female counterparts.

In terms of early detection, while it’s essential that every woman learns how to perform an efficient breast self-exam, mammograms are also important. However, it’s also an option that many women fear.

Over the weekend, Paris Jackson posted a photo to her Instagram, in which the 14-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson can be seen rocking a bobbed hairdo that is very similar to Miley Cyrus’.

“okay and what about this one…? since everyone seems to hate the first one” she wrote, referring fans to her cropped, highlighted new look.

No word on whether Jackson actually cut her hair; in fact, subsequent photos posted to her Instagram, in which she is seen sporting much longer hair, suggest she was just wearing a wig via Celebuzz.

State Department rejects call for UN Ambassador Susan Rice to quit…

The Obama administration is rejecting a demand from a senior Republican lawmaker for the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to resign. Rep. Peter King of New York said last week Susan Rice’s explanation of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was a foreign policy failure.

He told CNN Rice should resign. Rice said five days after the attack that there was no evidence it was premeditated. Officials now say it was a planned terrorist attack distinct from the mob protests in the Arab world over a U.S.-made Internet video ridiculing Islam.

Still, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Monday that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton believes Rice has done a “superb job.”

Nuland said the department rejects calls for Rice’s resignation via TheGrio.

The 31-year-old sat down with CNN anchor Larry King for Social Media Week LA Friday and spoke about his many roles as an actor, rapper, host of America’s Got Talent and doting husband of superstar Mariah Carey — as well as his recent health struggles.

“I have no regrets,” Cannon said when asked if he would change anything about his life. “I believe life is all about the stories you can tell, and I have some great stories to tell, good and bad.” Cannon

French fashion brand has awesome ‘No Chinese Allowed’ rule…

French fashion brand Zadig & Voltaire plans to open a hotel in a renovated building in Paris that was once a private mansion. But, says the founder and owner Thierry Gillier, when the hotel opens in 2014, “Chinese tourists” will not be welcome.

Gillier told the apparel industry trade paper Women’s Wear Daily at the Zadig & Voltaire fashion show:

“It will be a slightly private hotel, not open to everybody, with 40 rooms. We are going to select guests. It won’t be open to Chinese tourists, for example. There is a lot of demand in Paris — many people are looking for quiet with a certain privacy.”

So, that’s a nice, bracing dose of racism and xenophobia!

When word of Gillier’s quote started to spread through the fashion blogosphere and Twittersphere — not to mention on the Chinese social-networking site Weibo — this weekend, accompanied by harsh criticism, WWD went back and quietly edited its story.

Gillier’s quote is now given as, “We are going to select guests. It won’t be open to busloads of tourists, for example. There is a lot of demand in Paris — many people are looking for quiet hotels with a certain privacy.”

No explanation was given for the change, and WWD did not see fit to mention that the article had been edited, which makes the switch extra sneaky. Click here to continue reading…

Interesting Fact: the HPV Vaccine is Mostly Safe!

is mostly, probably, almost definitely safe, according to a new study that included almost 200,000 girls who’d received at least one dose of the quadrivalent HPV vaccine which is marketed by Merck & Co. and protects against four strains of HPV.

Researchers did, however, find evidence of two unpleasant side effects — increased instances of fainting and skin infections, these side effects were mostly expected, and fainting has been linked to receiving injections in general.

According to the study, fainting was six times more likely to occur on the day of vaccination, as opposed to a period of many moons later: there were 24 cases per 1,000 of fainting on the day of vaccination, and an average of 4 per 1,000 during a period of several months later.

Incidents of skin infections, meanwhile, were twice as likely to occur about two weeks after vaccination, as opposed to some random time further down the line when mystery splotches on the skin would be more likely to trigger hypochondriac reactions ranging from:

Show Review: Tom Ford Spring 2013…

Tom Ford has become notoriously private when it comes to revealing his collections. The designer is not a fan of the instant gratification provided by the internet, and instead opts to unveil his offerings in magazines months after they’re privately viewed. This season saw Ford step out of his comfort zone, welcoming us in grand fashion.

The foray harmoniously mixed sex and sport. Hair was pulled up and teased into beehives as models struck sassy poses. The color palette was perfectly in tune with what we’ve been seeing on the Spring 2013 runway, neutrals, and black and whites, that were ultimately punctuated by shades of blue. Judge halts Pennsylvania’s tough new voter ID requirement…

A judge postponed Pennsylvania’s controversial voter identification requirement on Tuesday, ordering the state not to enforce it in this year’s presidential election.

The decision by Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson on the law requiring each voter to show a valid photo ID could be appealed to the state Supreme Court. The law could go into full effect next year, under Simpson’s ruling.

However, Simpson based his decision on guidelines given to him days ago by the high court justices, and it could easily be the final word on the law just five weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

His ruling came after listening to two days of testimony about the state’s eleventh-hour efforts to make it easier to get a valid photo ID. He also heard about long lines and ill-informed clerks at driver’s license centers and identification requirements that made it hard for some registered voters to get a state-issued photo ID. Rashida Jones talks ‘awkward teenage years’ on Conan O’Brien show…

Almost everyone went through their awkward years during adolescence. But those are usually times they’re not eager to return to, and certainly not eager to share with the world via Twitter or Facebook. Not everybody is Rashida Jones, though, who shared her love of her own awkward teen photos with “Conan.”

“The braces, like, perm hair, turtleneck combo? That’s not, I think, not that sexy,” Jones said of one of her tweeted pictures as Conan O’Brien showed it to his audience.

O’Brien matched her, though, pulling out one of his own embarrassing pics. “You’re way cooler than I am. The awkwardness factor is not high for you,” she determined.

She also let Conan know that on a recent trip to Germany to promote her movie “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” her favorite German word was a little more butt-related than you’d expect.

It may be easier to look back at some of the more awkward moments of development when Jones has clearly moved beyond them. She looks absolutely stunning in this recent Flaunt magazine photo shoot.

The mama-of-two recently opened up about the parenting path she has chosen for her children compared to way she was raised (her dad is musical legend Lionel Richie).

“One of the biggest differences in the way I’m raising my kids versus the way I was raised is that I was on tour a lot,” Nicole divulges. “I don’t really do that with my kids.”

Mark Zuckerberg: “I Wear the Same Thing Every Day”…

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview on NBC’s Today set to air on Thursday that he lives a “simple” life and proudly wears the same thing every day. Zuckerberg — who has appeared on GQ and Esquire‘s worst-dressed list in 2011 — confessed in an interview taped last week with Today host Matt Lauer that he owns “maybe about 20″ identical grey t-shirts.

“I mean, I wear the same thing every day, right? I mean, it’s literally, if you could see my closet at home…,” Zuckerberg said. “My wife has a bunch of stuff. Although she has her drawer — primarily scrubs for the hospital — I get one drawer. And my drawer is about 20 of these gray t-shirts.”

He said he has one drawer “like men everywhere.”

‘The X Factor’ Hosts: Khloe Kardashian, Mario Lopez New Co-Hosts…

It’s looking like Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez the new “X Factor” co-hosts. According to TMZ, the duo has been added to the Fox show’s payroll, but are still putting the finishing touches on their deals.

In August, TMZ reported Kardashian’s rumored hosting role, while Lopez’s name has been in the mix since July. Other rumored hosts included Erin Andrews and Stacey Keibler, among others.

So how are the current “X Factor” judges getting along? Not perfectly, if Simon Cowell’s words are any indication. While rattling off a list of people he finds annoying on “Conan,” 20-year-old Demi Lovato’s name came up.

“You can be a bit of an a**hole,”Lovato, who was also appearing on “Conan,” snapped back.

Oh oh! It’s trouble at American Idol audition as Nicki Minaj curses at Mariah Carey!!!

Minaj derailed the “American Idol” auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina Tuesday, after swearing at Mariah Carey and threatening, “I’m gonna knock you out” sources tell TMZ.

In the footage, obtained by TMZ, Nicki is clearly furious and was heard shouting, “I told them I’m not f*ckin’ putting up with her f**kin’ highness over there.”

Sources say Nicki later threatened to “knock out” Mariah, but she said it before the video starts. It all went down while the two were sitting at the judge’s table with Keith Urban sitting in between them and Randy Jackson sitting on the far end, next to Mariah.

We’re told the whole thing exploded over a disagreement over a contestant’s performance. Listen closely as you play the video and you’ll hear:

Nicki: Get this s**t in self control. Get in control. Get in control.
Randy: Settle down, settle down
Nicki: Don’t lose your head. Don’t lose your head (inaudible). Don’t tell me I’m a gangster.
Nicki (inaudible) every 5 minutes: So every time you patronize me, I’m-ma take it back, and if you’ve got a f**king problem, handle it.

Mariah is talking back at Nicki but it’s hard to hear what she’s saying. According to our friends at MouthToEars.com, producers ended the auditions for the day so the two judges could cool down. We’ve confirmed that happened.

Big wigs on the show seem uncharacteristically upset by the blow up. It seems producers are worried about Mariah and Nicki co-existing for the long haul.

On his morning radio show Wednesday morning, On Air With Ryan Seacrest, the media personality confirmed the reports and dished some behind-the-scenes details about what really led to Minaj’s erratic outburst toward Carey, in which the rapper exclaimed:

“I told them, I’m not f***in’ putting up with her f***in’ highness over there,” during an audition.

“It was intense,” he said. “It was heated.”

Happy 20th wedding anniversary President & Mrs. Obama…

The 44th President of the United States and his beautiful wife celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Since assuming office in 2008, they have showcased their love while sending a message of ‘true love exists and marriage can work’.

Although President Barack Obama was gearing up for the election a mere 34 days away, he still managed to celebrate a sweet milestone in his life on Wednesday by tweeting:

“Twenty years ago today, I married the love of my life and my best friend. Happy anniversary, Michelle,” Obama Tweeted.

The couple met at Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin in 1989, and shared their first kiss outside a Hyde Park shopping center. There is even a plaque outside, which bears a quote the then Senator shared with Oprah Winfrey in 2007:

“On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb. I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate.”

Yesterday, Family Circle announced that First Lady and Princeton-educated attorney Michelle Obama’s white and dark chip cookie recipe roundly defeated challenger and stay-at-home mom Ann Romney’s M&M’s cookie recipe. And while it’s tempting to joke about the metrics of stay-at-home mom success versus lawyer success, let’s get down to the crux of the matter here: why the fuck are we still making the candidates’ wives bake cookies?

Believe it or not, the First Lady bake-off started in 1992, not 1952, after a terribly uppity Hillary Clinton remarked that after her husband was elected Governor of Arkansas, she chose to pursue her career rather than “stay home and bake cookies.” America did a collective spit take at her unbridled, raw, unfeminine ambition.

Who did this be-pageboyed Delilah think she was, eschewing cookie baking? If every mom in America followed Hillary Clinton’s dangerous example, cookies might nearly go extinct, like the California Condor. Amish leader, 15 followers convicted of hate crimes in beard attacks…

Sixteen members of a breakaway Amish community in rural eastern Ohio, including its leader, were convicted of federal hate crimes Thursday for the forcible cutting of Amish men’s beards and Amish women’s hair.

“Sam Mullet Sr. and the 15 followers were found guilty of conspiracy to violate federal hate-crime law in connection with what authorities said were the religiously motivated attacks on several fellow Amish people last year.
The verdicts were read in U.S. District Court in Cleveland following several days of jury deliberation and a trial that began in late August,” a U.S. attorney’s office said.

Prosecutors said the 15 followers, at Mullet’s instruction, shaved the beards and cut the hair of Amish people who had left his group over various religious disagreements. The lovebirds enjoyed a private tour of the popular scare-fest, before posing with Australian pop singer Cody Simpson and Hostel series director Eli Roth for a post-fright photo, in which Bieber, 18, appears to be clinging onto Gomez, 20, for dear life.

Given all the fake blood and terrifying props, it’s a good thing Bieber didn’t fall ill this time. The singer recently vomited during a performance after drinking too much milk before the gig.

John Hawkins — the right-wing blogger who recently wrote that ridiculous post for the official Romney campaign website about how Mittens is a dreamboat superhero — tweeted that a “white woman voting for Obama is like a black woman voting for the KKK” during last night’s Hannity “expose” on Obama’s five-year-old race speech.

The analogy is actually more bewildering than it is offensive; maybe the SATs should hire Hawkins to stump high-schoolers into oblivion? Unless he’s busy writing more fawning blog posts for Romney’s site – via Jezebel.

Salma Hayek shows off curvy figure for Harper’s Bazaar…

Her beauty and enviable hourglass figure have made her one of Hollywood’s most glamorous and successful stars. But ‘short and chubby’ is how Salma Hayek perceives herself.

And the Mexican actress, who last month turned 46, has called it a ‘miracle’ that she is still working. Miss Hayek has just finished work on the latest Oliver Stone film, Savages, opposite the popular American starlet, Blake Lively.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she attributes her success to luck and appears to be one of the few stars to acknowledge how difficult it is to carry on working in Hollywood once you get to a certain age.

She said: ‘The worst thing you can be in Hollywood is a woman and over 40. On top of that, I have an accent, am dyslexic, short and chubby. You name it I have it, but I am here. I must be the luckiest girl in the world to be working’.

Amber Rose talks about morning sickness, natural child birth and more…

Amber Rose checked in with fans on New York radio this morning and gave an update about her health and pregnancy. The pregnant model called into HOT 97, one of New York’s top hip hop radio stations, where she spoke to Cipha Sounds, Rosenberg and K. Foxx about her pregnancy and the newness of mommyhood.

She revealed she is in her 20th week of pregnancy and is just starting to feel better after being discharged from the hospital due to excessive morning sickness. She said she couldn’t hold down any food or drink and had to be put on an IV to help her recover.

She also revealed that she plans to have the baby via “water birth”– at home with dim lights, candles and with Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” playing in the background.

And in case you were wondering, she also said she has given up smoking cigarettes and there is a “No weed allowed in the house.” rule in effect via YBF.

Spotted: Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa Out and About…

After her radio interview, the mom-to-be Amber Rose was spotted out and about to a lunch date with fiance Wiz Khalifa rocking a skin tight black dress and high heels. Amber knew how to accessorize the dress, showing off stunning white earrings and sunglasses. Wiz also looked stylish in his leopard jacket and high-top shoes.

The engaged couple are waiting in great anticipation for their little one to arrive.

Facebook Hits One Billion Active Users…

Facebook has officially reached one billion active users, Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced.

In an official blog post, he writes:

“This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month. If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.”

“Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”

Facebook had 955 million active users in July 2012, and though gaining 45 million users is not a small task, it seems as if the world’s biggest online social network took a little bit more time than expected reaching the 1 billion milestone.

Still, it’s an enormous number, dwarfing most other players in the social networking space by orders of magnitude. It took Facebook several years to reach the magical 100 million number back in 2008, but from then on it seemed like Mark Zuckerberg’s baby could not be stopped.

However, despite its ever-expanding user base, Facebook started looking vulnerable after its stock plummeted following the less-than-stellar initial public offering in May 2012. Via Mashable.

During a Thursday campaign event in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Biden praised Obama’s performance in his first of three debates with Romney. The president gave Americans “a clear, specific plan how to get this country moving forward again,” Biden told the crowd.

He also spoke to reporters ahead of Thursday’s event and threw support behind Obama’s performance, which many Republicans and Democrats have said was surprisingly lackluster.

“I think the president did well,” Biden told reporters, according to pool reports. “He was presidential.”

By contrast, he said, Romney was all over the place with his proposals. He addressed the subject of Romney’s tax plan, which calls for a 20 percent across-the-board reduction in marginal tax rates, plus the elimination of the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

A study by the non-partisan Tax Policy Center projects the plan will amount to a $5 trillion tax cut over 10 years, but Romney denied during the debate that the tax cut would be that large and repeated his claim that he would eliminate enough deductions to counteract it. As Obama pointed out, however, not enough deductions exist to accomplish this.

“Last night we found out he doesn’t have a 5 trillion tax cut,” Biden said. “I guess he outsourced that to China or something, I don’t know, that’s offshored. But it’s hard to figure out what Gov. Romney’s position is on a number of issues.”Click here to continue reading…

Jim Lehrer made it clear to TMZ that he’s well aware he was treated like a doormat by President Obama and Mitt Romney during Wednesday’s Presidential debate.

Our camera guy asked Lehrer at Reagan National Airport: “Do you feel you were disrespected by President Obama and Governor Romney?”

Lehrer responded: “I didn’t expect much. I didn’t have a lot of expectations.”

BTW, Lehrer issued a statement saying part of his mission was to stay out of the way of the flow. Mission accomplished.

Tamera Mowry-Housley visited Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills with her husband Adam on Tuesday. The expecting Tia & Tamera star ordered five cupcakes, including “two chocolate marshmallows, a cinnamon sugar, a dark chocolate and a german chocolate,” an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Both dressed in casual clothes, the couple then visited the Sprinkles Ice Cream store to further satisfy any remaining cravings.

Alfre Woodard takes up work to deal with empty nest syndrome…

Alfre Woodard uses acting as treatment for Empty Nest Syndrome. The ‘True Blood’ actress recently told the Associated Press that she’s hard at work promoting her new venture, ‘Steel Magnolias,’ to suppress the idea of her son and daughter not being at home anymore.

“I’m three weeks into my empty nest and I’m still a little weepy,” said the actress. “[Raising my son and daughter] was just the most incredible human experience I think that I could have, and I miss it terribly.”

In missing her children, Alfre is thankful to have the opportunity to work alongside Queen Latifah and Jill Scott in her new gig.

KitchenAid posts insulting tweet about President Obama’s deceased grandmother…

KitchenAid quickly issued an apology last night after an offensive tweet about President Barack Obama’s deceased grandmother was sent out from its official Twitter page.

The tweet was sent during the first presidential debate last night, after Obama mentioned his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died in November 2008, during one of his answers:

“You know, my grandmother – some of you know – helped to raise me. My grandparents did,” Obama said while discussing Social Security and Medicare policies. “My grandfather died a while back. My grandmother died three days before I was elected president.”

He then called his grandmother “fiercely independent” and said she was only able to be so because of Social Security and Medicare.That is when the offensive, now deleted, tweet was posted on the KitchenAid profile page to its more than 25,000 followers:The company deleted it promptly, but not before it was retweeted hundreds of times:

“During the debate tonight, a member of our Twitter team mistakenly posted an offensive tweet from the KitchenAid handle instead of a personal handle,” Cynthia Soledad, a representative for KitchenAid explained to Mashable. “The tasteless joke in no way represents our values at KitchenAid, and that person won’t be tweeting for us anymore.” Click here to continue reading…

PBS makes Ad Buy for ‘Big Bird’ on Twitter…

PBS could teach other brands a thing or two about how to turn a meme into a marketing opportunity.

During the first presidential debate last night, Mitt Romney admitted that:

“I love Big Bird,”

but still wants to withdraw government funding from PBS, the television network that airs Sesame Street among other popular shows.

The Internet quickly rose up to defend Big Bird with all sorts of Photoshopped tributes, fake Twitter accounts and even some fundraising campaigns.

Rather than ignore the meme, PBS has decided to make an ad buy for the phrase “Big Bird” on Twitter. Those who search for the “Big Bird” on the social network will see an advertisement for PBS at the top, which says:

“PBS is trusted, valued and essential.”

The ad then directs users to check out valuepbs.org, a website full of statistics about the network’s reach, public service initiatives and how much it really costs taxpayers ($1.35 a year.) Click here to continue reading…

Actress Laura Dern is a soccer mom!

Recently divorced actress Laura Dern cheered her son on from the sidelines at his game. With her upcoming role in movie Mothers Day, Laura Dern’s schedule is likely to be packed as she learns her lines ahead of the US release next year, but she still managed to take some time out on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old cheered from the sidelines as her son Ellery, 11, played soccer in Santa Monica, California. And the star appeared to enjoy playing the role of soccer mum as she proudly smiled at the sporting event.

The Jurassic Park star looked casual as she watched on and chatted with a friend while she stood by a black metal fence at the side of the pitch.

She donned a light blue t-shirt with an abstract pattern on the front and wrapped up warm by wearing a black cardigan over the top. Essence Atkins talks motherhood on and off screen…

Essence Atkins knows more about love and motherhood than the average new mom thanks to her on-screen family. The actress recently told SheKnows.com that she entered the wonderful world of parenthood with a few pointers because of her role as mom to two teenagers, Coy Stewart as ‘Kevin’ and Teala Dunn as ‘Lindsey’, on the recently syndicated show ‘Are We There Yet?’.

“We have been close friends with the Stewart family for a while, and they just have wonderful children. When I found out I was pregnant with a son, I sent Coy a message. I told him, ‘Thank you for being the first person to teach me how to love a boy. You taught me how to love a son,’” said the actress.

Essence went on to say, “Coy has a little brother and we’d play NERF wars and things like that on set. It was just great fun to be around them — young people who are so talented, hungry and ambitious, and also so intelligent and thoughtful.”

“To have the experience of them look at me and think of me in that way (as a mom) — it was a boost to my confidence. You know there’s a moment of ‘Oh my gosh, we’re pregnant!’ and then the ‘Can we do this? Do I have the capacity?’ and they made me feel like I had the capacity.”

Now, as a mom to 9-month-old Varro Mendez, Atkins is doing her best to balance her career with family life while doing everything with excellence.

“I’m a type-A person, and I think a lot of career women are,” says the actress. “We have great expectations for our careers and for our children. And anytime anything falls short, we have a tendency to blame ourselves if we think we can do things at a greater capacity. We need to give ourselves permission to go with the ebbs and flows of life as there are always going to be mitigating circumstances. Not everything has to be perfect. We just have to do our best — sometimes that bar is higher than others.”

Obama Campaign Building Vandalized With Words ‘Muslim Lier’ In Iowa…

President Barack Obama‘s campaign building in Des Moines, Iowa, was vandalized with the words “Muslim Lier” (intended to be “Liar”), spray-painted on a large banner.

The Des Moines Register reports:

The blue banner is 16 by 8 feet and hangs on the south side of the building at 2307 Hubbell Ave. The words were written with red spray paint, police said.
The vandalism occurred sometime between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday, when it was discovered, police reports show.

The same message was reportedly spray painted near the Iowa State Fairgrounds earlier in the week. The damage was estimated at $500.

Dating back to his 2008 campaign, a faction of Americans have falsely believed that Obama is a Muslim, even though he has openly discussed his Christian faith. According to a poll released in July, 30 percent of Republicans and 34 percent of conservative Republicans identified the president as a Muslim. Click here to continue reading…

A look at this weekend’s box office openings: ‘Frankenweenie‘ & ‘The Paperboy‘…

Filmmaker Tim Burton unearths material from his past and resurrects it for an all-new full feature film in Frankenweenie, while Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman strip down and sizzle on the silver screen in The Paperboy by filmmaker Lee Daniels.

Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie:

In Burton’s latest film, the famous director draws from his 1984 short film — also titled Frankenweenie — and combines it with his love for stop motion animation.

Starring Winona Ryder and Martin Short, the flick is an homage to the 1931 film Frankenstein and revolves around a boy named Victor who uses the power of science to bring his dead dog back to life. For Ryder, the film marks a reunion with the director who helped make her a teen star more than two decades ago in Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands.

“With Tim, it’s just a complete trust, and to be asked to do something that is so personal to him is incredibly humbling,” Ryder said, smiling. “It’s such a special movie for me and for, I think, everyone involved. I feel like it’s beaming off of my face!”

Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy:

Lee Daniels, who earned an Oscar nomination in 2009 for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, is making his way back to the silver screen with his newest drama, The Paperboy.

Based on a novel of the same name by Pete Dexter, the movie centers around two journalists (Efron and Matthew McConaughey) who are tasked with researching the events surrounding a man on death row. During the investigation, one falls in love with the criminal’s sex-crazed girlfriend (played by Kidman), while the other starts questioning his own journalistic integrity.
