Shocking: Sikh Temple Shooting!

A group that monitors hate crimes says the suspect in a shooting that killed seven at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee was a musician in white power bands whose lyrics express hate against minorities and ethnic groups.

The gunman, Wade Michael Page, was also killed in Sunday’s shooting at the temple. Mark Potok with the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., said Monday that Page had been on the white power music scene for more than a decade in bands including Definite Hate and End Apathy.

Potok says the music is so violent and full of lyrics talking about carrying out genocide against the Jews and other minorities that the whole business exists almost exclusively over the Internet – via SFgate

LAPD steps up patrols around Sikh temples

Police in Los Angeles have stepped up their patrols around Sikh temples, advising officers to take an extra look at those places of worship for at least the remainder of the day, officials said Monday.

In the wake of the tragedy in Wisconsin that left seven people dead, the Los Angeles Police Department has instructed officers on patrol to make extra swings past Sikh temples in North Hollywood, Northridge, Canoga Park and elsewhere. In addition, department officials have gone to the temples to meet with their members.

“We always have that fear that there might be a copycat, so we just provide the extra patrol to make sure everything is safe,” said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman. “It’s something done when any major incident happens” in another part of the country. Read full story here and watch video clip below…

Sikh temple shooting: Gunman had been on investigators’ radar

Wade Michael PageFederal investigators had “looked at” Sikh temple gunman Wade Michael Page more than once because of his associations with right-wing extremists and the possibility that he was providing funding to a domestic terrorist group, but law enforcement officials at the time determined there was not enough evidence of a crime to open an investigation, a senior U.S. law enforcement official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, would not say Monday which law enforcement agency had considered investigating Page, or when. Read full story here…

Gunman who opened fire in Wisconsin Sikh temple exhorted other white supremacists to act

Wade Michael Page played in white supremacist heavy metal bands and posted frequent comments on Internet forums for skinheads, repeatedly exhorting members to act more decisively to support their cause.

“If you are wanting to meet people, get involved and become active,” he wrote last year. “Stop hiding behind the computer or making excuses.”

A day after Page strode into a Sikh temple with a 9mm handgun and multiple magazines of ammunition, authorities were trying to determine if the 40-year-old Army veteran was taking his own advice when he opened fire on total strangers in a house of worship. Read full story here…

Sikhs say turbans misinterpreted as symbol of fanaticism

To a Sikh man, the turban he wears is a symbol of freedom, love and justice — values taught by their founding guru for 500 years. To a hate criminal, it’s a target.  In the past decade, there have been three killings and several serious beatings of individual Sikhs, but nothing like Sunday’s mass killing at temple near Milwaukee.

Police say a suspect connected to white supremacy groups killed one woman and five turban-wearing men at their Sunday worship. Security has been increased nationwide at Sikh temples, known as gudwaras, and at Muslim mosques as well, according to leaders in both communities. Read full story here…

Alleged Wisconsin Gunman Wade Michael Page’s Ex-Girlfriend Arrested

Police say they have arrested the former girlfriend of Wade Michael Page, the man who allegedly shot and killed six people in a Sikh temple, after authorities say they found a gun in her Milwaukee home. Cook was taken into custody on the grounds that she is prohibited from having a gun as a convicted felon, a federal law enforcement official said. Cook was convicted in 2002 for fleeing and eluding a traffic officer.

Milwaukee police released a statement Tuesday after the arrest of Misty Cook, saying, “In a joint investigation with the FBI, the South Milwaukee Police Department has arrested Misty Cook on the crime of felon in possession of a firearm. Charges will be sought through the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.”

There’s no indication Cook was involved with the attack. Much like her ex-boyfriend, according to the Anti-Defamation League, Cook was involved in white supremacy. Read full story here…

CNN forced to apologize after Sikh temple shooting…

CNN has been forced to apologise after playing Billy Joel’s song Only the Good Die Young following a segment about the Sikh temple massacre in Wisconsin.
A panel on Monday morning’s Starting Point discussed the shooting – in which six people were killed and three injured – with Narinder Singh, the chairman of the board of trustees for the Sikh Coalition.

Then after cutting to a three-minute commercial break, the program returned with the song – and the show’s hosts seemed unaware of the thoughtless choice.

The song contains the lyrics: ‘They showed you a statue, told you to pray, they built you a temple and locked you away. But they never told you the price that you pay… Only the good die young.’
It was part of a playlist chosen by the day’s guest, New York Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf.

‘That’s why you were singing along with me this morning,’ host Zoraida Sambolin joked with Sheinkopf as the song played. Read full story here…Gaffe: CNN came under fire for playing the song Only The Good Die Young after an interview with Narinder Singh, from the Sikh Coalition, who was talking about the Sikh temple shootings in Wisconsin

ImageThe FBI said Thursday it will join the police investigation into the death of Chavis Carter, the 21-year-old man shot in the head while handcuffed in the back of a police car in Jonesboro, Ark.

The investigation comes amid lingering questions over who pulled the trigger. Police said he committed suicide with a gun officers failed to find when they searched him. His family members said they believe he was killed by police who are attempting to cover it up.

Carter suffered a single, fatal gunshot wound to the head. He was detained on Saturday night following a traffic stop in Jonesboro, about 2 1/2 hours north of Little Rock, after officers said they found marijuana and empty baggies. Eunice Johnson Overlooked on Intl’ Best Dressed List?

We’ve been pouring over Vanity Fair’s 2012 International Best-Dressed List that was released this week, highlighting the sartorial prowess of the world’s most stylish beings. Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Ozwald Boateng and actress Farida Khelfa are just a few of the notables who snagged spots on the coveted list. While we were surprised by a few of this year’s honorees (Morley Safer, seriously?) it was an even bigger shock to find out that in the list’s 72 years of existence fashion icon Eunice Johnson never garnered a spot on the list.

Cathy Horyn, fashion editor at The New York Times, exposed this bit of information in her “On The Runway” column today and we’re still trying to pick our jaws up off the floor.

Eunice JohnsonJohnson, who died in 2010, was a pioneer and legend in the Black fashion world. As the wife of John H. Johnson, the founder of the Johnson Publishing Company of Ebony Magazine fame, she was the creative force behind The Ebony Fashion Fair, the famous touring fashion show for women of color. Johnson was among the first to bridge the divide between the world of high fashion and the Black community. And she did so when no one else would–or cared to try. Read full story here…

Clint Eastwood endorses Mitt Romney…

Clint Eastwood Has Endorsed Mitt RomneyWhile giving a speech to a group of Republican donors at a fundraiser in Sun Valley, Idaho yesterday, Clint Eastwood revealed his endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Sure, it’s not on the level of Jenna Jameson’s endorsement from yesterday, but then again, what is?

Anyway, during his speech, Eastwood recalled the first time he saw Romney in a campaign ad during the filming of Mystic River in Massachusetts.

“I said, ‘God, this guy, he’s too handsome to be governor, but he does look like he could be president.’…as the years have gone by I began to think even more so about that.”

Then, continuing, Eastwood explained that he endorses Romney and plans to vote for him during the upcoming election. Read full story here…

Flight Canceled? What To Do When You’re Stranded…

A United Airlines flight from China was recently delayed by three days. According to ABC News, the situation was so tense that violence broke out at the airport.

United has now dropped to last place in on-time arrivals among the major carriers. While some blame maintenance difficulties as a result of their merger with Continental and others cite a possible pilot strike, one thing’s clear: United passengers are probably in for a bumpy ride this summer.

Delays are bad enough. But what should you do if you are flying United -– or any other airline –- and you experience a flight cancellation?

1. Be Prepared

Never take it for granted that your airline will get you to your destination as promised. If you’re on a tight schedule, spend a few minutes looking up different flight options that will get you to your destination by the time you need to be there. Consider alternate airports that will get you close enough. That way, if your flight is canceled, you can suggest an alternative when you call the airline. Speaking of which… Read more tips here…

President Obama and Mitt Romney release statements on Sikh Temple Shooting…

Both President Obama and Mitt Romney have released statements on today’s shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin via CNN.

President Obama’s statement:

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin. At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded.

My Administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation.

As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family.

Mitt Romney’s statement:

“Ann and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the victims of today’s shooting in Wisconsin. This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship.

Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Oak Creek Sikh community. We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead.”

Networks struggle to appeal to Hispanics…

Sofia Vergara is probably the most recognizable Hispanic actress working in English-language television. She is one of the stars of “Modern Family,” the highest-rated scripted show on network television, and she has parlayed her celebrity into commercials for brands like Pepsi and Cover Girl.

Despite her popularity, “Modern Family” is not a hit with Hispanic viewers. Out of its overall viewership of 12.9 million, “Modern Family” drew an average of only about 798,000 Hispanic viewers in the season. That audience accounts for only about 6 percent of the show’s viewers — less than half of what you might expect given the 48 million Hispanic television viewers that Nielsen measures.

The same pattern can be seen on other top network shows: “Two and a Half Men” on CBS averaged 611,000 Hispanic viewers out of an average total of 14.6 million viewers. “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC averaged 583,000 out of 10.9 million. “Glee” on Fox averaged 518,000 out of 8.7 million. And “NCIS” on CBS averaged 509,000 out of 19.1 million. Read full story here…

Ngeo Boon Lin, Malaysian Pastor, celebrates gay wedding reception in home country…

A gay pastor who married his musical producer boyfriend in New York last year has fulfilled a vow to hold a wedding banquet in his native Malaysia in what they believe is the first such event in the Muslim-majority country.

Malaysian-born Ngeo Boon Lin and African-American husband Phineas Newborn III, quietly held the closed reception Saturday – complete with public kisses and karaoke ballad performances – with about 200 guests, including a handful of Chinese-language journalists who were asked not to report on the event until afterward.

The couple risked the ire of a government that has banned a gay arts festival, prosecuted a politician for sodomy and declared that homosexuality has no place in Malaysian society.

“We’re thankful to be able to make Malaysian history here,” Newborn said.

Ngeo, an ethnic Chinese pastor who has lived mainly in the United States since 1998, attracted criticism from Malaysian officials and religious groups when he married Newborn, a Broadway musical producer, last August. Read full story here…Ngeo Boon Lin Wedding

President Obama accused of “racism” against white in new superPAC web ad…

ObamaA web ad released by a new superPAC suggests that President Obama’s administration has quietly accepted and even promoted racism against white people. The ad, by a superPAC called FightBigotry, said that the president has gotten a free pass for “his disturbing, yet crystal-clear pattern of tacitly defending black racism against white folks before and since being elected president.”

According to ThinkProgress, the group was founded by Stephen Marks, a Republican media consultant and opposition researcher, who penned a 2008 book called “Confessions of a Political Hitman.”

The ad goes on to assert that Attorney General Eric Holder said that the administration’s critics are motivated by race.

“Implying that whites are too stupid to have honest disagreements with the president without being racist is, in and of itself, racist against whites,” the narrator says. Read full story here and watch video clip below…

The ad attributes that assertion to a December 2011 New York Times article where Holder told a reporter that a few critics were “conflating things, conveniently leaving stuff out, construing thins to make it seem not quite what it was.”

It’s yet another sad day: racist parents batter daughter…

A couple were jailed yesterday for a brutal attack on the daughter they felt had shamed them by dating a black man. David and Frances Champion repeatedly punched Jane in the face and shouted racist abuse while kicking her boyfriend out of the family home.

They lost control after they returned home to find their 17-year-old daughter in a ‘state of undress’ with Alfonce Ncube, a court heard.

After throwing the waiter out of the house, Mr Champion, 50, grabbed his daughter by her hair and started to hit her, said Nicola Powell, prosecuting.

‘He told her she was destroying the family and pushed her out of the door, Champion shouting racist language to describe Mr Ncube,’ she added.

Jane went to stay with her grandmother but returned to her parents in St Thomas, Swansea, once the situation had apparently calmed down.
But a month later her parents challenged her over Mr Ncube when they returned from a pub. Read full story…'You deserve it': Jane was punched in the face by her father after admitting she was still dating Mr Ncube. Her mother also hit her, saying 'you deserve it. It is all your fault.'

Harry Belafonte: “Mitt’s not my cup of tea”…

APHarry Belafonte has spoken out against President Barack Obama, but that doesn’t mean he supports Mitt Romney.

Asked whether he’d like Romney to win the election, Belafonte told the Hollywood Reporter, “Only if I would like to see the end of civilization. No, absolutely not.”

“Mitt Romney is not my cup of tea at all,” he added.

The singer has previously criticized Obama, charging that the president lacks moral courage.

Dismayed at the state of the nation, Belafonte told THR, “…I think the period now is the most challenging I’ve ever lived in.”

“The power in many societies has become almost absolute,” he said. “Those who have the power in the free enterprise system start to crush societies and create wars that are unholy. Top ten differences between white terrorists and others…

  1. White terrorists are called “gunmen.” What does that even mean? A person with a gun? Wouldn’t that be, like, everyone in the US? Other terrorists are called, like, “terrorists.”
  2. White terrorists are “troubled loners.” Other terrorists are always suspected of being part of a global plot, even when they are obviously troubled loners.
  3. Doing a study on the danger of white terrorists at the Department of Homeland Security will get you sidelined by angry white Congressmen. Doing studies on other kinds of terrorists is a guaranteed promotion.
  4. The family of a white terrorist is interviewed, weeping as they wonder where he went wrong. The families of other terrorists are almost never interviewed.
  5. White terrorists are part of a “fringe.” Other terrorists are apparently mainstream. Click here to read more…

Women, white people: is that what campaign 2012 is coming down to?

President Obama appeals to women by pushing the issue of access to contraceptives, while Mitt Romney accuses him of watering down welfare reform — an issue that tends to stir up feelings about race among whites.

With the election still locked in a near-tie, the politics of gender and race have moved into the spotlight of the presidential campaign.

For most of the summer, the debate has focused on two things: the state of the economy and Mitt Romney’s background in business. But in recent days, the two campaigns have added new, sharp-edged issues to the mix.

On Wednesday, President Obama flew to Colorado, a key battleground, where he pushed the issue of access to contraceptives, which is also the subject of a campaign ad in swing states featuring quotes from Romney attacking Planned Parenthood. Read full story here…
